PETROLEUM USES

World consumption of petroleum and its products is the subject of a survey which has been made by the ( New York firm of Henry Doherty] and Company, in which they express the conclusion that last year's consumption, estimated at 1,373,000,000 barrels, was approximately equivalent to the production of crude oil. Of the total consumption, gasoline comprised 40 per cent., kerosene. 9 per cent., gas and fuel oils 43 per cent., lubricating oils 3 per cent., and miscellaneous products 5 per cent. The ! value of products consumed during the year is estimated at 1,313,096,000 dollars. The United States is, says the report, hy far the most important conr suming country, utilising 900,000,000 I barrels, or about 65 per cent. of the l world's demand. Russia, which ranks second, consumes only one-tenth as much as the United States, and the difference between these countries is more apparent when one realises that the consumption of gasoline per j I capita in the United States was 138 gallons and in Russia only 1.41 gal- j ! lons. These figures, on the other | hand, indicate the possibility of an • increase in the Russia consumption when the internal conditions become normal. At present, with a population of 161,000,000, Russia consumes less gasoline than Australia, with only about 6,500,000 inhabitants. The United Kingdom is the third largest consumer, with a total of 62,500,000 . barrels, and a per capita demand . about one-fifth that of the United ; States.
