Wellington, Monday. An announcement has been issued by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe to the effect that the King has been graciously pleased on the occasion of the New Year to eonfer the following ' honours : — Knight Bachelor Alexander Gray, K.C., of Wellington. William Perry, J.P., of Masterton. C.M.G. Robert Sutherland Forsyth representative in the United Kingdom of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board, and representative for New Zealand at the Empire. Mark-et Board. James Marchbanks, formerly chief engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board. C.B.E. George Percival Newton, former under-Secretary Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington. Mr. Alexander Gray, K.C., has for many years been recognised as one of the leaders of the legal profession in the Dominion and particularly in Wellington where he has practised since 1886. He was educated at Wellington College and entered the. profession when he was articled to the well-known firm of Izard and Bell. He was admitted to the bar in 1881 and first practised in Greytown before going into partnership in Wellington in 1886. He was admitted as a King's Counsel in 1912 and was Commissioner for the Auckland Hospital enquiry in 1926. He has, on different occasions, been both president and vice-president of the New Zealand Law Society. He acted as chairman of the Legal Conference held in 1928. Mr. William Perry is the head of the well known Wairarapa family of that name and is one of New Zealand's leading pastoralists. He is an acknowledged authority on Lincoln sheep and his flock has a Dominion wide reputation. His sheep have been most succssful in the show ring and his animals are in demand by overseas breeders. He has also developed a large and valuable Romney stud. He has taken a prominent part in all farming activities in the Wairarapa and has been a member of the Meat Control Boardj He was actively eoncerned in the formation of the Royal Agricultural Society and has been its president since inception. He has also served as a member of the Board of Agriculture and as chairman of the Wool Allocation Committee. In his early days, Mr. Perry represented Wairarapa at Rugby and he has published a hook on sheep farming. Mr. Robert Sutherland Forsyth is a native of Dunedin and is an ex-Otago Rugby representative. He joined in the National Mortgage and Agency Co., as a junior in 1896 and was in charge of the company's produce and merchandise department in Dunedin for 10 years. He has also acted as manager of the company's branches at Ashburton and Timaru and filled tho position of chaiman of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed to his present position in 1923. Mr. James Marchbanks, M.I.C.E., was appointed general manager and chief engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board in 1909. He was born in Dunedin, and entered the Public Works Department as a junior in 1878. He later joined the staff of Otago University as assistant to Professor Hay. He surveyed the Manawatu Gorge Line and carried out a great deal of tunnelling in various construction works. He joined the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Co., in 1890 as assistant-engineer in charge and later filled the position of chief engineer to the company. Mr. George Percival Newton joined the Public Service as a temporary clerk in the Education Department in 1893. Later he received an appointment as a Parliamentary Committee clerk and as clerk to the Bank of New Zealand commission of enquiry. In 1896 he was appointed to the Colonial Secretary's office (now Internal Affairs) and in 1912 was appointed assistant under-Secretary o f the de^ partment. He was under-Secretary from 1928 until 1931 when heretired. He has been a member of the Town Planning Board.
