-By Telegraph — Copyrlght).
Re-c. Dec. 30, 9 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 30. There were nearly 5Q,000 people present at; the test match .before a ball - was jbowled. Gre-at excitement prevailed when it hecame known that ! Bradman would- play. Larwood opened with the off theory but Voce. used the much discussed leg theory. After only two ove-rs, there was a delay of 10 minutes while a new ball was being obtained. Larwood resorted to the leg the-ory in the third oyer. Woodfull, who although very slow seemed comf ortable, batted for 53 minutes. Fingleton, although not brisk, was confident. The weather became more sultry after lunch, adding to the fast bowlers' task. O'Brien batted 65 minutes and was run out, Fingleton calling for an impossible run, and Pataud-i making a smart return, to forwar-d leg. Bradman, who had a tumultous reception, was out first ball in attempting a leg hit off a poor ball. Fingleton secured his 50 in 141 minutes. McCabe was very cautious. The century was reached in 159 min- ' utes. The Fingleton-MeCabe partnership raised 64 runs. McCabe batted for 76 minutes and hit one. boundary. Fingleton, when in the sixties, had two narrow escapes from being caught off bumpers from Larwood and Voce. Richardson ppened brightly, but runs were difficult to get. Larwood and Allen were the-n bowling the offtheory, while Voce and Bowes were using the leg-theory. Fingleton played a patient innings with neat strokes. He was at the wickets 234 minutes. The scoring continued slow, a factor being that there were no slow bowlers. Richardson faced the bowlers. 74 minutes and hit five fours. He gave a good display and was dismissed by a smart one hand catch at short leg. Voce was the. most successful bowler, taking three for 39 off 17 overs. Allen took two for 41 off 17 overs. The fielding was excellent, Ames in particular being very reliable. The innings lasted 286 minutes. The attendance which was a world record for cricket, was 63,993, and the receipts amounted to £5577.
