AMERICAN PRODUCERS THREATEN TO SEVER SUPPLY theatres may close
— By Telegraph — Corvrlght).
Rec. Dec. 30, 10.55 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 30. A war is at present raging between American film distributing companies and Australian companies. The former demanded that their terms for the supply of films be accepted, and the Australian theatre owners are. making a determined stand against these terms, and in particular against the system of block booking, which requires that a year's output of films shall be bought as a unit without right of rejection. They declare that many undesirable films are forced on them. Neither side will give way. The American interests declare that they prefer to stop the supply of American films. Australian interests maintain that rather than give way they will close their theatres. Unless some new developments occur there is every prospect of both threats being carried out.
