ON RIGHT ROAD

GOVERNOR PLEASED WITH AUSTRALIA'S BRIGHT FUTURE Adelaide, 'Saturday. Confidenee in the future of the Commonwealth was the keynote of a vigorous farewell speech to members of the Caledonian Society by the Governor, Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven, at their annual dinner on Saturday night. Referring to his departure for England on Thursday, on leavd, he said that he would he able to tell those at home that Australia was .facing' her ciifficulties with true British pluck and determination, and that she had taken the only road that would lead her to ultimate success and pfosperity. "When I return to England," said Sir Alexander, "I shall be able to say that Australia has taken the right road — a diffieult one, but the only one that will lead her to success. • People will ask me what are the future prosp'ects of South Australia. If I had gone home in the normal course of events two years ago, I should have found that a rather diffieult question to answer. I should have had to say that Australia was going through a diffieult term, and that it was not quite cl'ear how she was going to come out of it . Australia's credit to-day, however, stands higher than it ever has. She is well through that first vital test, but it is only the first test, and I think that the second is now coming to us. Not long ago the Empire's combined side came to very definite conclusions, and undertook definite obligations. At the moment these are only on paper. Before long, however, these obligations will have to be put into action. That is where the second test is going to be. On the manner in which these obligations are discharged will nest the future of the world, arjd especially that of the British Empire. When I am asked what of the future of South Australia, I shall be'able to give a very good r'eport." . •
