MAORI SPORTS MEETING HELD ON BOXING DAY

The Maori sports meeting held at Pora Poro on Boxing Day was favoured by ideal summer weather; a bright sun tempered with a fresh breeze. A large crowd of Maoris and Pakehas enjoyed a very fine programme. Chief interest centered in the horse events. Many well-known show horses and riders were competing and the rivalry was decidedly keen. The cycle track was rather on the rough side and the riders particularly the back marlcers were under a very severe handicap. The results were as f ollows : — 100yds. Maiden Raee. — Oswald, 1; Pile, 2. Time, 12s. •One Mile Cycle Race. — Brennan, 1; Ryan, 2; Archer, 3. Time, 2.43. Bending Competition. — Butterworth, 1; Page, 2. 75yds. Boys' Race. — White, 1; Lawson, 2. Musical Chairs (horses). — Gordon, 1; Butterworth, 2. 100yds. Open Handicap. — Pile, 1; Chadwick, 2; Oswald, 3. Maiden Horse Jump. — Gordon (Eldorado), 1; Kelly, 2; Black, 3. Two Mile Cycle Race. — Hyland, 1; Archer, 2; Jones, 3. Married Men's Race. — Mason, 1; Brennan, 2; Stewart, 3. Flag Race. — G. Kelly, 1; A. Stewart, 2. Horse Jump (steeplechase style) — Black, 1; Thompson, 2; McGougan, o t>. 75yds. Girls' Raee. — A. Cartwright, 1; H. Cartwright, 2; M. Kelly, 3. Potato Race (horses). — E. Nolan, 1; Butterworth, 2. Three Mile Cycle Race. — Jones, 1; Hyland, 2; JDpncaster, 3. Members' Race. — Constable Johnson, 1; J. Wano, 2. Open Horse Jump. — Allan Stewart, 1; Thompson, 2. The meeting was a financial suecess and the club hopes to offer better prize money next year.
