CHILD INJURED WHEN STRUCK BY A LOG
-By Telegrf-ph — Cr>cynght).
Whangarei, Friday. A fatality occurred at- Whangaruru yesterday, when Mary McGee, the 13-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. McGee, of Whangaruru, lost her lif e while playing in the surf with some other children. The child was a half-caste Maori. Four children went for a swim. A strong easterly was blowing and a very heavy sea running. The children did not venture out far, but contented themselves with playing on a large log close in shore. In the midst of~ their fun a big roller came in and knocked Mary McGee off the log. As the log came inshore she did not have any chance of escaping it, as it was turned over by the waves, and it rolled on her. She was badly crushed and was taken from the water in an unconscious eondition. A doctor was summoned from Hikurangi, about twenty miles away, but when he arrived the child was dead.
