. HOLIDAY RACING CHANCES OF CANDIDATES IN ELLERSLIE MINOR EVENTS. BOXING DAY POSSIBILITIES.

(Notes by

Leaving the review of the Cup and Railway for another and later day a | review of the form of the minor events at Ellerslie may not be out of i place for Boxing Day. • * * j The opening event is the Queen's Plate run under weight-for-age conditions and attracting a field of 15 of whom Azalea and All Supreme are in the Railway, Prolyxo and Broken Rule in the Robinson. Probably the first two will start here. However, the field is well balanced and the placed horses not easy to sort out. Carfex has been running well of late whilst Lordly Knight from Gisborne has been working well. Jonathan is very fit just now and though Sen- . orita has not fulfilled early promise she may do. better here. Berate, how- j ever, is said by her trainer to be a | real good one and she should be equal j to accounting for this field if she is. ! La Moderne has been a bit unluclcy but Gay Marigold may do well. In 1 a good race the lilcely ones read King's Knave, Lordly Knight, Jonathan, Carfex, Senorita, Berate, Gay Marigold and the best of these Berate Carfex _ Gay Marigold from QUEEN'S PLATE, of £300; 1 mile: Senorita, All Supreme, Supreme Ruler, Jonathan, Berate, Carfex, Azalea, Lordly Knight, King's Knave, Glenhaupo, La Moderne, Gay Marigold, Prolyxo, Sunny Bachelor, Broken Rule. The G.N. Foal Stakes will be sure to attract a lot of attention for the pick of the babies are meeting over six furlongs. Red Manfred is one who is very highly regarded and should be favourite, though Tavern Knight is said to have whips of toe. Midian is useful but should be held safe by Diatomous who is very forward. Impasto went well in a two-year-old parade at Waipa whilst Guarantee won the McLean Stakes at Dunedin. Pegged Exchange is handy and so is Epigram but Princess Doreen though she was let np in her work does not seem to have lost anything by the spell. It should be a fine race with preferences for Red Manfred Diatomous Princess Doreen from GREAT NORTPIERN FOAL STAKES, of £750. Two-year-olds. Colts and geldings 8.10, fillies 8.5. Six furlongs. Red Manfred, Tavern Knight, Midian, Pegged Exchange, Impasto, Diatomous, Guarantee, Epigram, 8.10; Princess Doreen, 8.5. Thirty-one is the field in the Robinson and this makes it pretty open even if there are half-a-dozen scratchings. Imamint is baclc to track form but is a chancy one at this time of the year. Sea Ruler despite his Te Awamutu failure is a good one. Karangapai has early speed and Woodful may improve. Royal Gallant has changed owners but that may not help him. Grand Spirit is useful and Lady Spy is very fast out of the slips. Moonfleet and Ruby Dawn may have a show but Miss Lorraine, Grand Review, Master Norval, Blanford, Sammy, Black Marlin and Aga IChan all have brackets against their names. The issue is very open and the choice may be all wrong of Miss Lorraine Ruby Dawn Sea Ruler from ROBINSON HANDICAP, of £200; six furlongs: Imamint, 9.1; Black Songster 9.1; Prolyxo 8.10, Sea Ruler 8.9; Karangapai 8.8; Woodful 8.7 |s Royal Gallant 8.6; Grand Spirit, Ladji Spy 8.3; Moonfleet 7.13; Aga Khan 7.13; Miss Lorraine, 7.11; Ruby Dawn 7.11; Grand Review 7.10; Master Norval 7.10, Holly Lu, 7.10; Merry Lap 7.8; Broken Rule 7.6" Blanford 7.4; Sammy, 7.2; Blaclc Marlin, Echo Song, Free Air, Great Bi'itain, Lady Winifrede, Ornamental, Queen Arausio, Sir Val, Toplight., Tahae Mea, Wilton. 7.0 * * * v There is a partieularly good set of leppers in the Grafton Hurdles and some well-known names fignre in the list of 19 acceptors. Captain's Gift from South is a good one but may not be able to give some of the otber weight. Jayson is useful but 2 miles may find him out. A better proposition reads Blacksmith who has run well of late. Royal Visitor seems nicely in, and Phil Brady's horse may be close. It seems funny to see Billy Boy, winner of all the best steeplechases with only 10.3 on his back. He is a wonderful jumper and though he may not be ready he must be respected. High Pitch who will be bracketed with Foxhound is a stayer as is his stablemate. The winner might come from Jimmy Irvin's charges especially early in the season. Standfast and Claremore who run in the nominations of Dr. Grant and his wife are both in good niek and might take out. Prince of -Grange and Advance Camp are moderates and if Arcade takes it into his head to go right Clem Buckenham's charge may be tough. Of the rest Trowbridge, Full Measure and Imperial Prince read best. It is a very open race, the best seeming to be

Blacksmith Irwiu's bracket Royal Visitor fx'om GRAFTON HURDLES HANDICAP, of £350; two miles: Captain's 'Gift 10,13; Jayson 10.8; Blacksmith, 10.5; Royal Visitor 10.5; High Pitch, 10.3; Billy Boy 10.3; Standfast 10.2; Claremore 10.2; Patutahi 9.10; Prince of Orange 9.9; Advance Camp 9.7; Arcade 9.5; Full Measure 9.3; Trowbridge 9.0; Imperial Prince, Absent, Sub-Editor, Foxhound, John Bull, 9.0. * * * The Nursery Handicap for the lower class babies sees several with winning form such as Gay Seton, Coronis, Fracas, Weatherwise, whilst •Alignment the full brother to Croupier is said to be a good 'un. . Bon Rapide and Arise are both promising

gia. Musquil has taken no hurt from . her fall. The issue is open but .may include j ; Fracas Coronis Gay Seton from NURSERY HANDICAP, of £250. Five furlongs: Gay Seton 8.12; Dole, 8.8; Fracas 8.2; Coronis 7.12; Bon Rapide, 7.12; Arise, 7.9; Alignment 7.3; Gold Poeket 7.3; Weatherwise 7.3; Pelagia 7.2; Musquil, 7.0. As far as form goes in the Christmas Handicap there should be nothing to touch the unbeaten filly Silver Scorn, but nevertheless form does not always work out. Cricket Bat is well in at 9.0 over the eight furlongs, and may give the filly all she wants. Korokio led nearly all the way in the New Zealand Cup and may go a good mile since the tirne there was a record. King's Archer is fast over anything up to ten furlongs whilst Gold Trail who beat Pillow i Fight must also be considered. Merry , Damon is useful but the class seems j a bit rich. However, there is usually an upset here; Lord Val can go a mile, and so can Chromadyne. Of the next three, Chief Joy is a bit unlucky but L'Allegro is a dual winner recently and handles the Ellerslie course well. IJanore has not raced for some time but she ran fourth in this race last year when Pegaway beat the dead-heaters Flying Prince and Autumn Sun in 1 1.38 2-5. She runs well first time up. i Another hard decision perhaps in i favour of | Silver Scorn Gold Trail Cricket Bat from CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, of £350; One mile: Cricket Bat 9.0, Silver Scorn 8.5; Korokio -8.3; King's Archer, 8.2; Gold Trail . 8.0; Merry .'Damon 8.0; Lord Val 7.0; Chromadyne 7.9; Chief Joy 7.8; L'Allegro mmbhhmumhmm
