DISTRICT FISHING

FORTNIGHTLY REPORT ADYERSE CONDITIONS APFECT RESULTS ON FLY ROTORUA LAKES AREA The fortnightly reports submitted to the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean) by his rangers indicate that during the period ending December 15, adverse weather eonditions have affected the results in various parts of the district. This applies to fly-fishing, although spoon fishing has also been affected. Dealing first with the Rotorua lakes area, the report states :— Changeable winds and weather eonditions during the fortnightly period ended December 15 made fly fishing very difficult. Those anglers who preferred to troll obtained satisfactory results as the fish were still to be found remaining out in the deep waters of the lakes. The mouths of the Ngongotaha and Waitete 'streams in Lake Rotorua were reported to be fishing much better. Major Myers obtained his limit at these spots on December 10. The following bags were reported: Messrs W. R. Wilson, and Wylie 136 fish, spoon, Rotoiti, eight days. Clarke (Melbourne) 85, spoon, Rotorua, three weeks, 2J hours per day. W.'R. Wilson, 26, spoon Rotoiti, 2 days; Hon. O. Nelson and Bryce, 15, spoon, Rotorua 4 hours; Matheson (jr.), 15, fly, Rotorua, 2 hours; Major Myers, 15, fly, Rotorua, 1 day; 0. Donohue and C. Thomas, 14, trolling, Tarawera, 1 day; Mrs. and Miss Boomer 13, spoon, Rotorua, i day; Captain Stanier and Captain Kay, 12 fly, Rotoehu, £ day; Major Isitt 9, fly,. Bay of Plenty Area In the rivers of this district, the fish are reported to be improving in condition. The best fish caught during the period weighed 81bs 12oz and was taken from the Whakatane River by Mr. J. Morice. Heavy rains on December 8 and 9V caused the rivers to rise and all excepting the Tarawera were, as a result, discoloured for several days. In 42 bags reported on by the ranger operating in the district, the bags average from limits to ftiinor catches of 2 to 3 fish per day. Some of the bags reported are as f ollows : — Messrs W. Scott (15), F. Matchett (15), J. Kearns (12) Mayo (12), C. A. Timbs (10), R. McDowell (9), Lines (9), Martin (8), Donaldson (8), C. Timbs (8), Rutherford (7), W. Doolan (7), T. Edwardson (7), H. McGregor (7), C. Cooper (7), W. Smedley (7), Claydon (7). Waikato River Strong winds broke up and distributed much weed on the Waikato River and consequently detrimentally affected the fishing. On this river near Rotokawa, Mr. Fulljames took 10 to 12 fish on the dry fly li ariv every evening he fished. A party of two rods operating below the Huka Palls took 8 fish on the spoon. The fish averaged 5ilbs, with the heaviest weighing 8 Ibs. Two rods (Palmers Mill party) took 30 fish in 2h hours below the Aratiatia Rapids. The fish however, were 011 the small side. Mr. Charters of Rotorua, fishing this river near Rotorua bridge took 20 fish during a week-end, average weight 2£lbs, heaviest 6£lbs. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, of Wanganui in 1 J hours took 20 good fish on the spoon near Rotokawa average 2ilbs, largest fish 5£lbs. Taupo Area Fishing generally was spoilt by a south-west wind which paevailed almost daily for the period. On this account several well-known anglers left this district after doing little if any fishing. Inside Rangitira Point was about the only available spot to fish. The launches were also restricted in their operations and none were able to venture past Rangitira Point. Colonels Robinson and Britton of Auckland, took fish up to 7lbs on the fly. They averaged about 5 fish per day each. Captain Rainey when the weather permitted, did well at -the 4-Mile Point where he took good fish up to 71bs in weight. Mr. R. Sharpe obtained a bag of 6 good fish averaging 5Jlbs with the largest fish 81bs, from Acacia Bay. In the vicinity of Whakaipo Bay one angler using the fly took 9 fish in 12 hours and considers he would have obtained his limit quite easily had he been able to stay longer at the spot. Dry fly fishermen met with good suceess. Several bags of 10 and 12 fish on the small sicle, were reported. The following bags were taken by launch parties. — Launch Sunbeam Napier party (2), 11; Launch Sunbeam, Messrs Norris and Bright, 13; Launch Sunbeam Reg Lawrence (Wanganui), 6. Tokaanu Area The river fishing during the period was not considered to be up t~. standard, the river for most of tlie period being bright and clear and therefore not conducive to good results. For the last two days of the period the river suffierec^ a green discoloration which made fishing practically impossible. In the lake,. trolling parties did very well. One party took 51 very good fish in two days the largest being 81bs, all the fish averaging 51bs. The fishing around all mouths is now commencing to become very good and three rods 'operating one day last wieek at the first mouth of the Tongariro took 18 very nice fish. Catches made in the Tokaanu area were reported as f ollows : — Mr. Barlow, 50; Bird and p'arty (5) 48; Sir Berkley Sheffield, 20; Mr. Worrall, 12; Mr. Swanger, 10.
