ROTORUA BEATEN

BAY OF PLENTY SIDE WIN BY 64 RUNS SEN S ATIONAL BOWLING A sensational finish occurred in the first representative fixture of the Rotorua criclcet team in a match against the Bay of Plenty played at Whakatane yesterday. Bay'of Plenty had scored 160 runs for the loss of five wickets when J. Hinton, bowling for Rotorua, captured five wickets with the same number of successive deliveries and disposed of the tailenders without furtner addition to the total. Rotorua occupied the wicket first and sent Beale and N. Hinton out as opening batsmen. Both started well, but Beale was caught by York off his own bowlihg when the total was 18 runs and his own score eight runs. Harding joined Hinton and the total was carried to 43 before the firstnamed was bowled by Menges. Hinton was batting attractively, but received little help from his team mates and the innings closed for 96 runs. York was the most successful Bay of Plenty bowler, taking seven wickets for 33 runs off 14.5 overs. H. Jessop and D. Lees opened for Bay of Plenty to the bowling of Sutherland and Wallis. Only seven runs had been scored when Wallis shattered Jessop's wicket. The following batsmen did not shape confidently and four wickets were down for 56 runs. At this stage, however, Simmons and Menges, and then York became associated and 58 runs were added for the fifth wicket partnership. It was when J. Hinton bowled Simmons for 39 with his second delivery of the day that one of the most sensational feats of cricket history took place, the remaining five batsmen going to the wicket only to be ?sent back without surviving a ball. Menges had batted particularly well for the Bay and secured the highest , score with 43 runs to his credit. Simmons and York also showed good batting form.
