STANDARD OF CRICKET IN ENGLAND LESS INTERESTING

Wellington, Friday. Mr. R. W. Rowntree, the Auckland and New Zealand representative wic-ket-keeper, who returned by the Ionic to-day from a business trip to England, expressed the opinion that cricket in England had slowed down considerably in recent years with the result that there was not now the enthusiasm * among spectators that once marked county and other big matches. Mr. Rowntree said that though the weather for the recent season had been very much better, especially toward the close, than during last season, the batsmen were content to plod along, and the play generally had been far from inspiring.
