BOROUGH COUNCIL

OP OTIKI COUNCIL HOLDS USUAL MONTHLY MEETING The following were present at the meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council on Tuesday — Messrs J. T. Thompson (Mayor), T. Ilitchcns, II. Budd, S. Shalfoon, J. Maine, J. Tabb. A letter of thanks was received from the Women's Institute for permission to use the borough council chambers for their committee meetings. In answer to a petition from several ratepayers at the northem end of the town it was decided to request the removal of a fence placed across that end of St. John's Street. Wharf Painting Cr. Maine stated that in view of the fact that prices for buttcr had dropped and ratepayers would thereby be affected, he thought the borough staff should paint the wharf buildings instead of having it done by outside labour. Cr. Shalfoon maintained that it would be better to have the work done by professional painters. Cr. Maine pointed out that it would be a saving of £25 to £30 in the council's revenue. Cr. Hitchcns suggested that the eouncil should call for tenders and if these were not satisfactory they should employ their own labour. Question Postponed Cr. Maine withdrew his motion in favour of a motion by Cr. Tabb that the matter should be postponed. The expenditure of £16 18s for the Greeting of fencing around the reservoir to prevent the encroachment of cattle was authorised.
