TROTTING NOTES
BRILLIANT TAXPAYER. There will he a ixetting meeting at New Brighton next Saturday and then there will he a lull until the holiday fixtures are got under way. The biggest gathering during the midsummer holiday period is that of tlio Auckland Trotting Club at Alexandra Park on December 27, 29 and 31, these days being sandwiched in between the racing at Ellerslie. While it is expectsd that the entries for the Auckland Trotting Club meeting, due this afternoon, will be made up principally of the provineial horses, ■ it is anticipated that there will he a very solid list of nominations from other North' Island centres and also from the South Island. The £700 Auckland Trotting Cup is a prize to be sought after in these hard times, and with three days racing on end it is sufficient to attract a Dominion-wide entry. The Cup limit of 4.32 caters for a hig lot of horses who have qualified in this class, and it would not be surprising if the field on the day is a big one. The meeting of the crack provineial horses with the hest from the South should undoubtedly furnish' a thrilling contest. The double suceess scored hy Brentlight at Claudelands last Saturdaywas fully anticipated, for the opposition in the two main races- was hy no means strong and the winner had porformed consistently during the last few months. Now Brentlight's next appearance may be in the Auckland Cup on December 27, and in his present form he will be one of the early selections. Brilliant When at Her Best. There seems to be little doubt but that if her trainer could only get Nell Volo to trot consistently and keep her feet throughout she would he in the hest class very shortly. The black mare has a lot of speed and it will be but a matter of a little time before she will be racing in much tighter classes. She is not a good betting proposition, however, despite her record of three wins and one seshe was lucky to return her baekers cond in her four starts to date, and a profit on Saturday. One of the most popular courses in the province is that°of the Waikato Trotting Club at Claudelands, for it is nicely laid out to ensure good runs for the horses, and it is not too big for the spectators to follow the contests intelligently from start to finish. Last week's meeting was successful from every viewpoint, even if one or two of the events fell iar ishort of providing good contests. That fine three-year-old Taxpayer is definitely under orders for Auckland this month, and. he will line up- in
the Great Northern Derby field at Epsom on December 29. It was originally intended to give him his last run next Saturday at New Brighton before sending him north, and following upon his racing at Addington and Forbury Park recently this- should keep Ihim right up to the collan.for his classic engagement. Indianapolis is also to be brought north for the Derby, and the meeting between thes6 two outstanding three-year-olds will he one of the high lights of the Auckland summer trotting carnival.
