CAR PARKING
RESIDENT.
To the Editor. Sir, — I was very pleased to see in your local column last Friday a reference to the number of motor cars which are allowed to be parked in the town area of xvotorua overnight and the necessiiy for the borough rouncil to take steps to prohioit the practice. As a resident of Rotorua and one who realises the difficulties through which the business people are passing, it has often been a matter of wonder .o me to know how the garage proprietors of the town have been able wo carry on, while any likely revenue from garage fees has been denied tiicm by the action of car owners in neglecting the facilities provided by ieaving their car unattended in the streets overnight. In view of the permission of this practice the indiVidual 'owner cannot rcasonably be blamed for the position, but it seems to me that ihe interests of large ratepayers have been badly neglected by the Rotorua Borough Council, which has not adequately recognised the enterprise of these garagemen in providing for the town facilities for motorists second to none in the Dominion for a town of the same size. These men have in most cases sunk all their available capital in the town and must be severe^/ handicapped in meeting payments for rates on their properties, and yet the council to which these rates ara payable , sits baek and makes no efi'ort to assist them. There are many other ccnsidera"ions which come to mind as reasons tur the exereise of more control, one ■•f which is the convenience cf these cars for a certain class to hold drmicag parties in, and unfortunately in many cases these persons are no re--pectors of plaees or times. No regu!iU,:on imposed would stop this pracn:v oi' ihe use of cars for this purpf'so, but ihe council weiud have *ii ucric its duty oi* ciearing the oieia:ce from the town slreeis aiid •b.Jiged ihe car-owners to seek more -.'•■•liided sp'ots for liiese revelries. 1 have no hositation in suggcsling -.lierefore that, in view of the .amount oi motor trafiic promised for the 'hristrnas period, the council should .iiimediately consider the imposition >.i a by-law concerning the oLSition, oy nrohibiting parking outside hotcianu in the town area streets for mere hau 30 minutes after midnight. vJars in attendance at public funcuon.s would of coursg be excluded.— 1 am.. etc...
