COUNTERFEIT COINS

* — LARGE HALF-PENNY STOCK DISCOVERED IN SYDNEYSydney, Saturday. In addition to thousands of counterfeit florins found in a raid on a suburban counterfeiting plant during the week, a big store of halfpennies was unearthed by the police. The number of these coins,- running into hundrds, occasioned some surmise as to whether the counterfeiter contemplated silvering them and stamping different impressions on the reverse sides. The probability of such a method is discounted hy reason of its crudity. Too True to be Good. Furthermore, the silver content of a genuine florin is so small that, apart from the cost of manufacture, the profit if counterfeits can be passed is 500 per cent. The silver content of a florin is ahout 4£d worth at the current price of silver, and counterfeiters are not eonfronted with any difficulty in huying the metal from metallugists in the city. Indeed, some connterfeit coins found contained 2 per cent. more silver than the genuine ones. Man Arrested. Last night Detectives Boswell, Swasbrick and Damera (Q) visited a home at Maroubra and arrested a man who is alleged to he the lessee of the premises at Alexandria. He was charged wtih having moulds and counterfeit coins in his possession.
