New South Wales compiled 273 at their first innings. It was announced in the morning that Oldfield was in bed suffering from influenxa, and as no other New South Welshman was capable o:f keeping wicket, Jardine readily agreed to Love being substituted for Oldfield. Jardine's act, which was unprecedented, was (appreciated by the New South Wales team and the public. Sutcliffe and Wyatt gave England a great start, adding 140 hefore O'Reilly claimed Wyatt's wicket. Frequent previous appeals for leg hefore by O'Reilly, who along with the New South Wales bowlers, troubled the batsmen, had been negatived. He maintained an immaeulate length. Sutcliffe went along, steadily refusing to take any'risks. Between the luncheon and tea adjournment he added only 4 runs. He eventually reached -the century in 213 minutes. He had 14 fours. The New South Wales total was reached with eight wickets iji hand. Sutcliffe and Pataudi in the third wickets partnership put on 100 runs in 78 minutes, of which Pataudi contributed 41 by neat glances and cuts. Pataudi went on to pass the half century and Sutcliffe 150. The fielding of the New South Welshmen was good and Bradman was outstanding, The attendance was 36,718 and the takings £2395.
