FOR FREE STATE MAN WHO PARTICIPATED IN REBELLION OF 1916 TREMENDOUS SURPRISE

Rec. Nov- 27, 6.30 p.m. Dublin, Nov. 26. Mr. Daniel Buckley, a shop-keeper, and ex-member of the Dail, has been appointed Governor-General. A communique states that His Majesty appointed Mr. Buckley on the adviee of the Free State executive. His appointment is a tremendous surprise, but Mr. Buckley is esteemed by all classes. He recently retired, transferring his shop to his son. The new Governor-General is elosely interested in the national movement, especially the revival of the Irish language. He participated in the 1916 rebellion, when he organised a small band of 'red' volunteers and marehed on Dublin. He was arrested and deported, but released at the Christmas amnesty. He was elected deputy for Kildare and voted against the aceeptance of the Anglo-Irish treaty- He was defeated at the 1931 elections.
