BILLIARD SALOON
GAME WHICH LASTED AFTER THE LEGAL HOUR As a result of a visit paid by a constable after the legal closirig hour.
P. C. Loughlin, billiard saloon proprietoi* of Taupo, was charged in the laupo Magistrate's Court yesterday with keeping his saloon open after hours. Five men who were found on the premises, J. T. Drieberg, Rangi Hepi, Iven Garmonsway, Lco Holmes and Norman Whaanga, were also charged with being found after hours. After hearing Loughlin's explanation, the Magistrate did not impose a penalty, but entered a conviction and an order to pay costs. Constable Brown said that at 11.20 p.m. on the night in question, he had found all the men accused playing billiards with the exception of Whaanga who was looking on. Loughlin was not present at the time. Loughlin explained that on this night he had been very tired and had gone home to bed leaving the key in charge of Garmonsway who had instructions to close up at 11 o'clock and put out the lights. Later, Garmonsway came to him and told him that the constable had come in after 11 o'clock and found them still playing. He stated that they had started a game before 11 o'clock and had decided to finish it. He regretted the occurrence. Loughlin was convicted ahd ordered to pay costs. Each of the men found on the premises was fined 10/- with 10/- costs.
