SHOT BY ROBOT
INYENTOR'S MISFORTUNE. Mr. Harry May, the inventor of the Robot mechanical man which was exhibited at Olympia recently was shot by the robot at the Brighton (England) Electrical Exhibition. He received a severely burned hand. Mr. May was demonstrating to a crowded audience how the robot fired a gun when the weapon went off. Mr. May, who had his hand near the hole cut in the barrel to allow the gas to escaped, recoiled from the shock. When the accident took place several members of the audience screamed, but Mr. May quickly calmed them, though in severe pain. While Mr. May was inserting the blank cartridge it was customary for the robot to say: "Mind, or I will blow your hand off." It was actually forming those words when the accident happened. In an interview Mr. May said, "I can give no reason why the gun went off except that someone in the audience may have said something which affected the mechanism. Of course I shall be carrying on the demonstrations because, if I did not, it would appear that 'Alpha,' the mechanical man, had become my master."
