ORIGINAL OF SCOTT'S NOVEL, i GUY MANNERING, TAKEN New York, Nov. 22. General police alarm directed to booksellers throughout the eastern section, revealed the theft on October. 24, of 2000 pages of.the original manuscript of Sir Walter Scott's "Guy Mannering," the property of Mr. J. P. Morgan, which was lent to the Colombia University for the; centenary exliibition. The value is not estimated, but it; is assumed to be high- The manuscript was locked in a glass case, and it is assumed that the thieves used a dupli-. cate key. ; Officials are inclined to believe that; the thieves are unfamiliar with maniil scripts, as they passed over incom-» plete manuscripts of "Waverley" and "Ivanhoe," which ai-e considered to be more valuable. j The theft was kept secret for soma time in the hope that the thieves would make contact with the owner. as disposal of the manuscript is con-j sidered impossible.
