wireLess wanted MEMBERS .QUESTION DEMAND .FOR RE-REGISTRATION OF WORKERS SOLDIERS IN CAMPS

Wellington, Wednesday. Answers to questions were circulated in the House of Representatives this afternoon. • Mr. W. Nash (Labour, Hutt) asked wh'ether he would make arrangements to abandon the usual qualifying period of fourteen days before further relief employment was granted to those who were diseharged from workingi under No. 4A Scheme after 26 weeks' employment. Mr. Coates replied that a man oh completing 26 weeks continuous employment under No. 4A Scheme) was required to re-register as unemployed and to fulfil the usual conditions regarding qualifications for further relief. It was to he regretted that the rule in regard to the qualifying period to be observed in such case couid not he varied. Mr. D. McDougall (Coal., Mataura) asked the Postmaster-General whether he would favourably consider the question of liaving a microphone installed in the House in order that the revtenue of the Legislative Department might he increased, and also that it might be the means of letting the people in the country who were conneeted by wireless hear what the Member of Parliament actually did say and not what the press stated that they said. In reply Mr. Hamilton replied that it was regretted that the request of the hon. mernber could not he given favourable consideration. Mr. A. J. Stallworthy asked the Minister of Employment whetlier hc would take steps immediately against the action of the Unemployment Board in sending* returned soldiers against their will to unemployment camps, breaking up the homes of exsoldiers and separating them from their families. Mr. Coates replied that no discrimination was made between returned soldiers and other unemployed men in regard to placing them in camps. A c-ertain amount of preference had. in fact, been extended to ex-soldiers by arranging sp>ecial camps for them. and also in not taking into consideration the disability pensions not exceeding 17s 6d per week.
