EXTRAVAGANT SPENDING
Sir, — We hear a lot about economy in administration of our national finance these days espeeially in our public works and railways. This is the way it is done: 20 per cent. cut off the workers; retire as many as possible on pensions, some at £2000 a year, some at £1500, some at £1000, others at as little as possible. The former high pensioned men are given a retiring allowance, also a job at £100.0 and £500. Now the latest is to provide a man with £250 per annum just to keep the poor man from being turned out of house and home. To provide this poor soul with the needful, other poor souls are to be reduced in their sustenance pay 20 per cent. thus putting them right on to the bread line and unable to pay housing costs. What are they to do? May I point out that all this affluence on one part and degradation on the other is being administered from the one source. Are the people of New Zea-
land, espeeially us native-born, going to take this lying down? I hope not. Why is our member not protesting? Helping the Liberal-Labour-Indepen-dent group, he professes to be a Liberal. I would suggest that a public meeting be held to protest against extravagant-spending of public funds. Our public works are dead or dying, and our railways are not paying — while on the other side people are being compelled to beg. We should also protest against the extortionate rate pf interest we are paying the banks when we could get our money from the same source as the banks at half the cost. Walce up New Zealand, don't be hypnotised any longer. Let us regain the position we once held. — I am, etc., C. J. TUCK. Rotorua, '14/11/32.
