"STRANGE CRIME"
CL.ERK GIVEN PROBATION FOR ROBBING BANK Auckland, Monday. Norman Gloag Smith, aged 25 years, who stole £3220 10s from the National Bank at Newmarket, where he was employed, was to-day released on probation for one year. Evidence as to his exemplary conduct was given by several witnesses, Two doctors said that they were of opinion that he was mentally not normal at the moment of his crime. Counsel for accused said that accused well knew that he could not dispose of the stolen. notes, the numbers of which were known. Mr. Justice Smith said there might have been some mysterious working of accused's mind which induced him to commit this strange crime. It was obvious that he would he detected. His Honour said he regarded the circumstances as exceptional. He hoped accused would never come before the Court again.
