MOTORISTS' ORDEAL
UNSUSPECTINGLY GIVES TWO LUNATICS A LIFT THREATENED WITH PISTOL Christchurch, Monday. Mr. Charles Thompson, of Southbridge, had an uncomfortable drive yesterday when motoring from Dunedin. 3 He gave two men a lift at Kartigi. They were escapees from tjhe Seacliff Mental Hospital, but Mr. Thompson did not become aware of this until near Timaru. On the journey the party was stopped twice and qixestioned by constables, who were on the look-out. On approaching Timaru the men saw that the motorist was suspicious, and one of them produced a pistoj and threatened to shoot him unless he drove north as quickly as po:> sible. The warnings were emphasised with occasional prods in the'back. Mr. Thompson, however, stoppec] the car alongside Constahle Swan who was waiting on the Saltwater Creek Bridge, and told the constable that his passengers werq the escaped men. The men were then taken into custody. The car was examined later and underneath the seat was found a harmless toy pistol.
