TRACK SEASON OPENS

The Whakatane Cycling and Athletic Club commenced its track riding season on Friday evening. There were f ourteen starters in the one and a-half mile and half-mile events, and despite the fact that the track was slow good times were registered. A scratch race created a lot of interest, the backmarker being called off at the end of every lap- --The field I by finally reduced to three, J. Whit- j ten winning the sprint with Archer > second and Coulter third. This race : carried with it Mr. E. Phillip's trophy. The results of the two other races were- as f ollows : — Half-mile: — T. Benton, 110yds, 1; L. Delahunty, 100yds, 2; E. Wilson, | 90yds, 3. ' | •One and a-half Mile: — J. Whitten, i scr, 1; E. Wilson, 200yds, 2; S. Don- j easter, 80yds, 3. « The big event next Friday night j will be over a three-rnle course for I a trophy presented by Messrs- Bridgers, Limited. An effort is also being made to arrange a ladies' race.
