SOCIAL EVENING

YOUNG COUPLE ENTERTAINED PRIOR TO THEIR MARRIAGE A large number of guests were present at an evening given for Miss Marjorie Looney and Mr Torrie (who are to be married shortly) in the Waiotahi Hall on Friday. Miss Looney's Opotiki friends brought useful kitchen gifts and a working committee, under the supervision of Mr. H. Simpson, had decorated the hall with coloured papers which hung in maypole style from the centre of the roof of the walls. The Gaiety Orchestra played the dance numbers with two lively extras by Miss Marjorie Looney and Mr. B. Burr. Miss L. Rau and Mr. M. Butterworth won a Monte Carlo. During the evening Mr. S. Small, on behalf of the Waiotahi guests, wished Miss Looney and Mr. Torrie the happiest of futures and presented them with a moquette upholstered chair and stool. Mr. H. G. Simpson spoke on behalf of the Opotiki guests and after giving the young couple a little advice, asked them to accept the many useful gifts that the ladies had brought along. Mr. Torrie thanked the ladies and gentlemen for the enjoyable evening. Little Colleen Burke presented Miss Looney with a bouquet of roses and fern. Those present were : — Mesdames B. Looney (blue satin), W. Looney (blue floral net), D. McNee (lemon figured satin), L. Bennett (green linen), A. Tee (pink georgette), G. Stewart (green satin), V. Moody (wine satin), N. McKinnon (green georgette), F. Small (white satin), J. Kirkbride (red satin), D. Moody (floral taffeta), D. Du Pontet (floral georgette), G. Carruthers (white georgette), J.
