REPLACING THE SHIP
Auckland, Saturday. Several offers have been made to the mission of vessels suitable to take the place of the Southern Cross. These offers will be considered, together with a suggestion that the old Southern Cross at present laid up in the Auckland Harbour ,should be recommissioned. The latter proposition is, however, unlikely to receive fav-
ourahle attention, owing to the heavy cost of repairs and reconditioning which would he necessary before she could pass her survey. One estimate of the cost is £1000.
