-By Telegraph — Copyright)
Wellington, Touesday. . Players all day were severely tested by a strong westerly wind " which came across the course in gusts the green s qonsequently being very fast and tricky and difiicult to judge. In the professional" matches, nothing oecurred in the afternoon to. attract attention. Shaw, who increased his lead over J. A. Clements to five up at the turn, had an admiring gallery, which afterwards attached itself in a great measure to H. A. Blaclc and Millard., . This match was the best of the day. .... Millard, who was in form in the . morning, had a lead of one up after lunch. The fmst was halved, but. a slice into the bunker cost Millard the second, making the match square. The third hole was halved, but the. "■ fourth, Black sank a seven foot putt for a win in four. The next Millard secui-ed by a fine recovei'y from the rough. He lost the sixtri, but took the seventh in four. The eighth arid ninth were squared, making the match all square at the turn. He won the tenth, but lost the eleventh, where he was in difficulties all the way. The next two were halved. Black made himself more secure with a win at the fourteenth. He should have won the pext also, but missed a putt by inches and the match ended two and one. ' Bartleet continued steady in the afternoon, hut this morriirig's lapse undid him. It takes more than steadiness to wrest a lead of four up from a player bf Wagg's calibre. Syme went out in the. afternoon in a winning vein, reaching the turn in 36 to stand five up. The game ended five and four". Four Stymies During the day, A. D. S. Duncan had four stymies dead with all successful. Blank's putting was poor and his driving was not consistently good, but his recovery was first rate. At the thirteenth in the afternoon, lie holed a sixty yard approach for triree. Duncan's golf was but average. His greatest superiority all day was putting. His cliip shots were not functioning as well as usual. Horton was playing fine all round golf. His iron play was as brillian,t as ever, and his wooden shots sound. He did 72 in the morning and was as good in the afternoon. Reilly and J. D. G. Duncan were a level pair. It was anybody's. game The Goss and Wynne match was another in which the issue was uricertain in the afternoon, Goss just managing to keep in front. Fryer and Mills were the only pair to require the extra hole. Fryer was two up at lunch. He was still two up at the ninth in the afternoon, but Mills squared the -game by the time the seventeenth was reaclied. The eighteenth was halved in four. Both were on the green at the extra hole, but Mills took three putts. Detailed Resulfs The following are the scores: ;Professionals, second round: Shaw beat J. A. Clements, 7 and 5; Branch heat C.
