"STEEPLECHASE"
OPOTIKI SETTLER COMPLAINS BITTERLY OF STRAY CATTLE. The straying of stock on the road was the suhject of an impassioned letter from a ratep'ayer to the Opotiki County Council, the text of which was: "For ,20 years past I have been cursed with straying stock grazing on the public tr'oads here abouts. The stock are owned for the most part by natives and some of them are steeplechasers that will jump any wire fence erected by man; others, again, on the other hand, will crawl through an auger hole, so you will see that this state of affairs is enough to make an ordinary man use very violent language. The county ranger often makes a raid out this way, but it mostly happens that th'e stock are inside their owners' fences or running on a vacant section owned by an absentee, on the day he rides out, so you see that no blame can be placecj^ on that member of the eounty's staff. Can the council do anything in the matter?" Cr. Neilson humorously suggested that the council should be supplied with a sample of the language alluded to, so that they could, see if they approved of it. The matter was left to the engineer.
