ROWING CLUB

The Whakatane Rowing Club held its offieial opening on Wednesday af- , ternoon. Conditions were favourable although the tide was out. The season promises to be very successful. Afternoon tea was served to the public on the banks of the river by the members of the rowing club and their lady friends. The trial fours competition for the Bergman trophy, was carried to the semi-final stage and the final will be rowed at the week-end. Results: — First heat: J. Pickworth (stroke), S. Dent, F. Cutler, F. Brown (cox) S. Grace v. B. Hooper (stroke), A. Kilgour, J. Henry, C. Chamberlain (cox) H. Grace. Piekworth's erew led all the way, winning comfortably by three lengths. The crews for the second. heat were: S. Grace (stroke), R. Taylor, Delahuntly, Staiger (cox) S. Grace v. S. U. Beckett (stroke), J. Burgess, Roberts, A. Kilgour (cox) H. Grace. Grace's crew won by two lengths. Third heat. Norman (stroke), W. Brown, A. Hollis, Fountain (cox) De Lacey v. Bush (stroke), Hansen, Wright, Thorburn (cox) J. Dent. Norman's crew proved too strong for their opponents and won by over two lengths. Two novice crews then took the water, the High School crew beating their adversaries over a half mile course. The semi-final for the Bergman trophy between Grace -and Pickworth was won by Grace's crew by a bare length. Mr. R. Bridger was starter and the judge was Mr. Dent.
