WEST RIDING EMPLOYEES ASSISTED BY DUTIES MET FOREIGN COMPETITION
-By Telegraph— Copyrlght).
Rec. Oct. 31. London, Oct. 30 The special correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, who is in the West Riding,- says that employers and employees declare that the scepticism expressed by Mr. H. Holdsworth (Liberal member for Bradford South) in the House of Commons regarding the Ottawa agreements is unjustified. . Last year's duties they state had considerably benefited the trade of Bradford and Huddersfield. Despite the dumpings of foreign cloth jnst before the duties were imposed, the new duties had enabled the Yorkshire manufacturers to meet their foreign rivals on competitive terms and much of the dumped cloths had already been re-exported. The home trade had improved and the export trade was reviving. The latter was now only checked by the currency restriction of Eastern Europe and South America. In his speech in the House of Commons, Mr. H. Hqldsworth snid nphody in the woollen industry . expected increased trade from the Ottawa agreements. Canada had given Bradford a five-foot wall to jump inistead o| a wall as high as -a house. She could jump neither. The Canadian tariffs were absolutely prohibitive.
