VISITORS DECLARE WITH SEVEN DOWN FOR 583 LARGELY BATTING PRACTICE
-By Telegraph — Copyrlght).
(Rec. Midnight.) Perth, October 28. The Englishmen declared at seven wickets for 583 in the first innings of their match against the Combined team. The batting was solid but featureless before lunch and the weather was fine but cloudy. The weather was overcast in the afternoon, light showers stopping the play for five minutes. The attendance was 12,000 and the gate £886. England's play seemed to indicate that the visitors were using the match for quiet batting practice. Play generally was solid and largely dreary. The fielding of the local side was poor but the inter-State players were brilliant. Bradman shone as a fieldsman and as a bowler, breaking up the chief partnership.
Ames iell to a ball brushing his pants and the bail. He did not consider himself out, hut bowed to the umpire's decision. He took 53 minutes to make 23. Iiammond and Jardine's partnership was an exhibition of solid batting, unhustled by the cries of the crowd for action. Twice they were counted out. Hammond showed masterly and finished footwork and scored slowly at under a run a minute. He brightened up later when clean bowled by the combined captain. He made 77 in 92 minutes, including one sixer and six fours. Allen, though never appearing comfortable, infused some life, making two fours in succession with 500 runs for 458 minutes. Bradman was given the ball and in the second over got Allen, who had made 17 in 42 minutes. Paynter, making his Australian debut, was unfortunate, a shower followed causing a short delay. Jardine, who had been solidly increasing his score, in the last over before tea was two off the century, but placed an easy catch to McCabe from Bradman at mid-on. His 98 included 11 fours. He hatted for 158 minutes. It was an unattractive innings generally. Jardine declared with five down for 583, compiled in 520 minutes. The wicket held well. The combined team opened with Singleton and Richardson to the fast bowler Allen. Nineteen runs were posted in the first four minutes, 4-0 in 16 minutes and 50 in 25 minutes. The lig'ht became poor and play was stopped with none down for 59 runs. Rain started afterward, promising a wet night.
