TOUCHY WORKERS
RAILWAY HANDS RESENT STATIONMASTER'S LETTER Christchurch, Satui'day. Railway casual workers at Lyttelton refused to start work this morning until a letter received by a number of men from the stationmaster was discussed with him and a settlement arranged. The men concerned were employed recently in discharging cargo from the steamers Norfolk and Waikouaiti. It was reported that lately complaints had been made that packages of general cargo dispatched from Lyttelton had been found on arrival in Christchurch to be in bad order, and accordingly the stationmaster had written to the men who had handled the cargo in the trucks, and also to the tally clerks, advising them that more care must be exercised in future. The men resented this. The stationmaster this morning made it clear that there was no suggestion of dishonesty, the complaint being that the defective condition of the packages had not been observed at Lylletlotn. Work was later resumed.
