Hawera, Saturday. The condition of William James Carradus, relief worker, who was shot from ambush at his residence at Patea on Thursday night, is reported to be serious. It is understood that a man has been closely interrogated in connection with the shooting, but no arrest has yet been made. The opinion is expressed that the attack on Carradus was the result of a series of premeditated attempts, as on two successive nights the gardqn gate had been propped open as though tp affprd a clear getaway fpr an intrudeiv When Carradus was shot, his left leg being badly shattered abput the lcnee, he saw someone wearing a slouch "hat running away. Carradus was removed to the hospital where an operation was perf ormed. The gun used was a fpwling piece. It was fired at ppint blank range, the shpt inflacting terrible injuries, the flesh being b}o"\yn away and the bone shattered.
