("Post" Special Commissioner.)

SPONSOR REALISES OPPOSITION AND WITMDRAWS BILL

Wellington, Friday. After less than an hour's discussion in the committee stage the promoters of the Religious Instruction in Public Schools Enahling Bill in the Legislative Council gave up what appeared to be a hop'eless fight and

withdrew the measure. Two supporters of the Bill, Sir Edwin Mitchelson and Sir T. Sidey, and one opponent the Hon. J. McGregor, were absent when the divisions were taken. On the second reading the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre paired with Sir Edwin Mitchelson and another pair was arranged between two other absentees,

but Mr. Mclntyre gave his pair on the distinct understanding that it would be for the second reading only. jThe amendment hy Sir Francis Bell to the short title had been carried on the casting vote of the chairman of committees, Hon. J. Hanan. The sponsor of the Bill, Sir James Allen, endeavoured to insert a definition of the Nelson system, but this was opposed and rejected on the casting vote of the chairman. Sir James then intimated his desire to withdraw the Bill as he could see it would not be passed.
