SULKY AND SADDLE

"Misere.")

EPSOM MEETING WET WEATHER CONDITIONS BOUND TO UPSET FORM. CHANCES OF MUULARKS

(Notes by

Vvith ihe clayey track at Epsom ,.oggy from recent rain (it is pouring as these notes are written) early spring form, when the tracks have heen easy to firm_is hound to get a I shoeking knock and, though some of the form horses can act in the heavy going, the hulk eannot, and there are : bound to be a series of surprises. * * In this instance, neglecting to a large extent recent racing form, "Misere" intends to indicate horses which in his opinion have shown a partiality for soft track conditions. V [ There are nine carded for the opening event, the Waitemata Handicap 1 of li miles for trotters, and of these the horse who will be plugging along ; in the wet, judging by his display at | Epsom last year, will he Win Huon, ' from Togo Lee's stable. Off 36yds., ! he must be hard, especially as Manj na's Son does not act in the mud and the back markers will have a lot of • j heavy slogging to do before they get j up to their handicap s. Grand Trii umph goes well in clay, and Waskasu j ran well in moderately stiff going. The elect may be: — Win Huon Waskasu Grand Triumph from — WAITEMATA HANDICAP, of £105, for trotters only. Class 3.48; 1 i miles. — Autumn Lu, Grand Triumph, Katalo, Manna's Son, Washasu, limit; Nell Volo, 12yds bhd; Win Huon, 36; Mattie Herbilywyn, 72; Moko Girl, 144. * * * * There are at least four mudlarks in the Improvers' Handicap who are likely to hold their own in the going. Cogent, who ran a useful third at Claudelands, ran a good second last year in fetlock-deep tracks. Stormy iVlack revels in the mud, and Worthy Chief also won in heavy conditions. Froin the same stahle as Win Huon in the previous race, Mountain Sun was extremely promising first time out hut has to he taken on trust in the order of things. Mazda is also a proven splosher and the issue may lie between: — Cogent Stormy Mack Mazda from — IMPROVERS' HANDICAP, of £105. Class 3.6; 1.1 miles. — Cogent, Ciniarion, Free Gifi, Lislea, Mountain Sun, r.ellota, Our Summer, Pedlar, Regina Desoy, Stormy Mack, Thelma Mack, Worthy Chief, limit; Fisher, Mazda, Raider £4. To those who remsmber last year's ioing at Epsom, when it was hock- .. p and Kewpie's Triumph and Peter i'iratc fought it out, there will be very .ndueement to support these :.vo again. Bo.h can hold their end in.mud. First Flight also has run .vell in the wet, but is not so partial .> it as the other two. Still, she may lr.prove. Peter Pirate has the hard- • t part to do. Arabond, off the limit, iias also a wet weather record, parti--idarly in his own home training ground, Hawera, where it is the usual Taranaki summer — one shine, seven showers. Direct Morning can also handle mud, but unless they have •rnproved or changed their habits, Caraui, Dan Direct, Anon, Kewpie's Guy and Pagean give of their best on top of the ground. Should the track ba lirm, Dan Direct and Kewpie's Guy will have friends but in the conditions at present prevailing the public may i-.ort out: — Kewpie's Triumph Direct Morning Peter Pirate from — JELLICOE HANDICAP, of £225; Class 4.35; 2 miles. — Arabond, Carnui, limit; Dan Direct, Direct Morning, 12 yds bhd; Anon, 24; First Flight, Kewpie's Triumph, Pageant, 36; Peter Pirate, 84. * * * There are only seven left in the Parnell and those who recollect what Claeo did to a better class field in muddy conditions last time will be very loth to let her slip. She won like a racehorse, but she is not always reliable, Guid Hairst should go well and Sid August always thought better of Realty in heavy going. He also has Homeward in his stable, and the bracket will be tough. Neither Price Etawah nor Margaert Wallace appeal, but Pukemiro may be close at the 'end. Wet conditions point to: — Claeo Guid Hairst' Pukemiro from — PARNELL HANDICAP, of £105; Class 3.37; li miles.— Guid Hairst, limit; Margaret Wallace, Prince Etawah, 12; Realty, 24; Homeward, 36; Cleao, Pukemiro, 48. =:-• * * * Old Billy Carbine makes another bow in the Mountain Handicap of li miles for square-gaiters, and the old chap is like Melba or Harry Lauder, always going to retire — till next time. Hue Coronade handles soft going well

and was unlucky at Claudelands. Both Mai'ble Star and Nelson Girl are bad breakers, hut E1 Merit, on her Claudelands win, must have a show. Moko Bells and Moko Girl are both useful, and Parrish Belle must crack it soon or lafer. Garl Mack handles the going, but breaks too much to be a safe investment. Roi Grande has yet to raee this season, but Windchat should go handily. However, Kolmar, old as he is, is likely to be very hard to head off in the clay. He is a great mudlark but has a very solid handicap of 108 yards. The same applies to Jock Bingen, who can go like a house on fire but lost his last race for galloping. It is the most open event of the meeting, for one never knows how some of these trotters will stay put. Among those with ehances are : — E1 Merit Hue Coronado Windchat rom — MOUNTAIN HANDICAP, of £115; for trotters only. Class 3.38; li miles. — Billy Carbine, Hue Coronado, Marble Star, Nelson Girl, limit; nii Merit, Moko Bells, 12; Parrish Bell, 24; Garl Mack, 60; Roi Grande, Windchat, 72; Kolmar, 108; Jock Bingen, 132. * * sj: Eight are left in the October Handicap, and Fisher and Pedlar "have another start. Gold Seam goes well , in mud and so does Betterwin, the grey being the preferred of the two from 12 yards. Historian is a promising sort, whilst Wee Machine may not like it so wet. Fisher, if he gets away, might atone for past defeats, but he is not to be reli'ed on at the post. It is again 110 easy race, but pubfic fancies may incline to:— Betterwin Gold Seam Pedlar from — OCTOBER HANDICAP, of £105; Class 3.40; 1£ miles. — Fisher, Gold Seam, Historian, Lady Amanda, Pedlar, Sister Chris, Wee Machine, limit; Betb rwin, 12. ' * # * The Electric Sprint has a good field and speculation is sure to take a wide range, _ Kewpde's Triumph, Kewpie's Guy, Little Guy, Real Girl, Dan Direct, Brentlight and Trustworthy (a real mud horse) all have shows and the final glaxtce at the machin's may show: — Kewpiie's Triumph Kewpie's Guy Brentlight-Real Girl brkt. from — ELECTRIIC HANDICAP, of £125. Class 2.48; 1| miles. — Brent Zolock, Brent Light, Little Guy, limit; Anon, Trustworthy, Te Wahia, Real Girl, 12; Dan Direct, Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie's Triumph, Pageant, 24; First Flight, 36; Mountain Dell, 48. ^ The first day closes with the Stewards' H miles, most of whose acceptors have already been seen out. The issue is open and in view of the going the public may seleet: — Rolfe Audubon La2y Coronado Claeo from — Hcceptances arid selections for the second day will app'ear on Monday morning. STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of £115; Class 2.57; 1| miles. — -Francis Lincoln, xiomeward, Jersey Thorpe, limit; Cleao, Miss Joan Direct, Nathaniel, PuKemiro, 12; Lady Coronado, Rolfe Auduhon, 24; Some Dillon, 36; June Nordica, 60.
