RIFLE CLUB

MARKED PROGRESS MAYOR ACKNOWLEDGES % ENTHUSIASM OF INSTRUCTOR TROPHIES PRESENTED A feature of the Bullseye Ball held last evening in the Majestic Ballroom by th© Rotorua Miniature Rifle CluTti was the presentat'ibn of 'trophies won during the season by th'e club mem-

bers. The presentations were made, by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. % ' Jackson, and .associated with him on the platform were Messrs. A. V. Merriman and W. Winslade, ' vicepresidents.. ' Before making the presentations Mr." Jackson referred to the remarkable progress made by the club since its ' f ormation some mohths ag'o, and said that although it was one of the youngest clubs in Rotorua it was not the least energetic, and that judging by the enthusiasm of the membeys it would not be long before it was the b'iggest in the' town. The Mayor said that not the least conspicuous member of the club was Sergeant-Majof W. Bates, whose enthusiasm and hard work was to a great extent responsible for the way t.he club had developed. Without .this enthusiasm and the support which the committee had received from the members the club would not have achieved the prominent position in Rotorua sport which it had attained. Irx making a special presentation to Sergeant-Major Bates on behalf of the" club, His "VVorship said that this was not the first occasion on which he had had the honour of aclcnowledging Sergeant-Major Bates' services to thq community of Rotorua, as he had undoubted abifity in carrying to' a successful conclusion any work in which he was interested. If every citizen displayed the same public spiritedness and energy as Ser- j geant-Major Bates, Mr. Jackson said, j he felt sure that Rotorua would be

one of the largest towns in the Do- j minion. In developing a healthy spir- j it of competition in the town, Roto- j rua owed the sergeant-major a deep 8 debt of gratitude. j That the Mayor's remarks were ] f ully endorsed by the large attend- 1 ance was demonstrated by the ap- ( plause Sergeant-Major Bates receiv- ] ed when receiving the presentation. |
