NOT ACCEPTED
NEW RAfls REFtrSED Hamilton, Monday.* As the outcome of a meeting held on Saturday, about 250 pmployees of the Horotiu Works of the Auckland Farriiei;s' Freezing Company, Limited, have decided not to accept thb new scale of wages which came into operation to-day, and a decision tq ce-ase work unless the old rates were guaranteed over a prolonged period was made. All the men affected were paid ori Saturday afternoon, at the eonclusiori of operations. The trouble, if continued, will me-an the cutting short of the "bobby' calf trade., Last month about 26,000 calves were dealt with at the works, while for the first fortnight .of this month the number reached 10,000. On two days last wee-lc the numbers were 1400 arid 900 respectively. Although f ewer calves are now being dealt witli as the dairying season advances, the number yet to be received is still considerable. Unless killing is resumed, this week the farmers and those b.uying calves from them will suffer heavy, losses, in spite of the low prices that are ruling. The cessation of operations coineides with the opening of the lamb season in the district. Last year 30,000 lambs Were killed at Horotiri for the export trade.
