LOCAL AND GENERAL
A Quick Trip Illustrating the possibilities of aeroplane travel in his address' to " the Rotary Club yesterday, Mr. E, Boucher said, that recently Pilot Allan flew from Auckland to Wellington and back in 6 hours 50 minutes. The. record of the ' flight showed a most remarkable variation in wind directions. Train Arrangements Particulars of train arrangements for Labour Day and the issue- of cheap excursion tickets and train arrangements for the Waikato Hunt Club's meeting at Cambridge on Labour' Day, 24th October, are advertised in this issue. Not So Bad "A parachute jump is not the terrible thing people suppose," said Rotariari J E. BouchCr when addressiiig .the Rotorua Rotarians yesterday. "The jerk when it opens is not severe— it has a cushion effect — and they generally open. Even if they don't the manufactui-ers are always prepared to replace a faulty one with a new one." Fifty Years Ago Clipping from its pages of 50 years ago the Bay of Plenty Times reports : — "The road through the Oropi bush is now in very fair conditidn and Mr. E. Robertson's four-ho^se coach accomplishes the through tfip from Tauranga to Ohinemutu in under eight hours, including a stoppage of half-an-hour to change horses.'" Tauranga Factory Payout The Tauranga Co-operative Dairy Association will pay out to suppliers on the 20th inst. 10id per 1b. for but-ter-f at of superfine quality supplied during the month of September. The factory is now turning out one toii of butter more per day. The number of suppliers has increased from 425 to 443. Visitors by Air Rain and heavy clouds over the Mamaku Hills yesterday afternoon made visibility bad and for a time Rotarians E. Boueher and P. Free were doubtful about making their return journey to Auckland by air. But the weather improved and they left the aerodrome in bright sunshine about five o'clock. Rifle Club Ball The dancing season is now drawing to its close, but there are still several notable social functions to signal its departure. One of the chief of these is the first annual ball of the Rotorua Miniature Rifle Club, which is to be held to-morrow night. The club is one of the youngest, but one of the most flourishing bodies in the town, and it can affo.rd to make its first annual ball something of a triumphal celebration. An energetic committee is in charge- of arrangements and good prizes are offered for novelty competitions. Special arrangements have been made with regard to the catering and everything has been done to ensure the complete suecess of the evening. Street Fighting An ardent desire to settle outstanding differences, fanned by the influence of a few "long ones," led to Jack Taupiri and Bertram Henderson, joining issue in Arawa Street on Saturday afternoon. Charles Edward Dryden decided to act as ref eree, with a bias towards Henderson. Naturally a crowd gathered and some one sent for the police. The battle ceased without delay and 'warriors, unwounded, sought cover. But the arm of the law is long and later in the afternoon they were all invited to spend the week-end with Senior-Ser-geant Carroll. Yesterday morning Messrs. H. Tai Mitchell and W. L. Richards, J.'sP., listened to their pleas of guilty and fined them £1, in default seven days' imprisonment. This fine was imposed conditional upon Henderson and Taupiri taking out prohibition "orders against themselves.
