many accidents. CAR OVER BANK MAKES LATEST OF A " SERIES TRAVELLEE'S MISFORTUNES

"When a /our-seater sedan ear failed to negotiate a sharp bend to cross a bridge and went over a baiik near the Opotiki Dairy Factory on Saturday night, it added oue more iteni to a sequence of misfortunes" which have recently befallen one of the passengers, Mx*. Collins, an insuranc.e agent, well-known in Gisborne ajtid the Bay of Plenty., . 'V" Mr. Collins, who is an elderly man, was in the Coronation Hotel ,at Qigr borne when it was destroyed by 'fire a few months ago. Ha managed to' make a hasty escape in his night' attire, and lost all his personal helongings. . ' Shortly after this, he was run over by a motor lorry between Hamilton and Auckland, and had a miraculous escape from death. His-leg--was badly knocked ahout, and the Auckland Hospital doctors set two -fractures near the ankle. On his •retUrn to Gisborne three weeks later, a fur•ther x-ray examination- revealed another clean break below the knee whi'eh had been overlooked in -the Auckland Hospital. Mr. Collins was admitted to the Gisborne hospital where"he remained for six weeks. During-thdt time the earthquake oecurred) andMs recovery was further set back ihy shock. He was discharged from hospital at mid-day on 'Saturday under medical advice to go to Rotorua for -f-ur-ther treatment, and was- proceedin'g there when the latest misf ortune'j* recorded aheve,. befel him. ; : Fortunately, when -the car failed to negotiate the bend, it-.spun in .the loose metal and dropped . backwaicd •over. the steep bank. , ,This served . tp break the force of the drop, • and neither the driver nor-. Mr. , Collins was injured, though the latter suffered severe shock. The . car was later towed into Opotiki hy Hornes' Salvage waggon, and after heing repaired, was able to pppceed on.its journey, though- it may be assumed with. the utmpst care!;in or.der ndfc.to tempt the malignant f at.e which seems to be dogging- Mr. G&llins. . v; . „
