WHEN SEEDLINGS STAND STILL.
It often happens that seedlings of annuals grow an inch or so and then refuse to make any further progress. The reason in most cases is that a hard crust of soil has been allowed to form around them. They will respond immediately if this soil is broken up with the hoe. Sometimes the water-can is brought out to help the laggards, but watering will be of no use until the soil is loose and fine. Occasionally seedlings hang fire because they are growing in lumpy soil. They cannot get a proper hold and it is a struggle for tbem to exist. Here the lumps must be broken down, the fine soil resulting then being pressed close up around each little plant.
