-By Telegraph — Copyrlght)

Auckland, Thursday. "It was necessary for many married men as well as single men to faee camp life and separation from 'their families during the war, and men and their families nobly endured. The present depression is really an extension of the war period, and we have to try and face the present disabilities as we faeed those during the war, but without the glamour and excitement." In these words, Arehbishop Averill discussed the problem of unemployment camps in his charge with the Anglican Diocesan Synod. "Nobody wishes to separate men from their families," said His Graee, "but surely it is better as a temporary expedient, to give able hodied men work in the country, and work which no man need f eel ashamed of doing, than to invent jobs f or them in and around the cities, many of which ar© of doubtful value, and can well be left to men unfitted for camp life. Genuine unemployed workers, I feel sure, have rio desire for unemployment pay and sustenance without work, and much prefer to retain their self respect. "It is very easy to eriticise the Government for" its want of vision in faeing the tragedy of unemployment," continued the Arehbishop, "but criticism alone is never very helpf ul, and probably the Government knows much more about the problem it has to face than most of its critics. It has honestly tried to meet the desperate situation and make the most and the best of the funds at its disposal.
