AUCKLAND DOCTOR APPEARS ON A SERIOUS CHARGE

Auckland, Monday. George Frederick Hewer (39), a medical practitioner who is already charged with illegally using an instrument appeared before the police court to-day on a charge of killing the woman's infant male child, thereby committing homicide. The police strenuously opposed an application for bail. Counsel for the defence contended that it is not a charge of murder in the ordinax-y sense. The police said it was technically murder. Counsel said he did not think there had been a similar case in England for 50 years. The xnagistrate refused bail till he had consulted the Crown solicitor and remanded Hewer till to-morrow.
