Rec. Oct. 10, 8.50 p.m. Sydney, October 10. Mr. Hugo Freeth was farewelled by the Sydney Morning Herald staff on leaving to assume the editorship of the Christchurch Press. Mr. Brinsden Fletcher, editor of*

the Herald, eulogised the very fine work and manly character of Mr. Freeth among his colleagues. He said that while regretting Mr. Freeth's departure all would join in congratulating him, as their guest was going to "edit a paper which had played an important part in New Zealand's development. It recalled the days of Mr. Samuel Butler and the writing of "Erewhon." Mr. Freeth should be able to hold high the standard of the schooi of journalism in which he had b'een trained partly in his homeland, hut during the past decade as a member of the editorial staff of the Herafd. Mr. Stewart, assistant manager, on behalf of the proprietors added his congratulations and his regrets at the loss of a fine collsague, countered by the knowledge that he was going to an important position. Mr. Freeth would undoubtedly uphold the high traditions of journalism which' he had imbibed during his term_ on tlie Herald. He was also prominent in various social activities connected with the paper and would he missed by every department. • The. prestotations to the guest included a painting of Sydney Bridge and lijxrary fittings -of Australian wood. Mr. Freeth, replying, said that ; he' was ' oyerwhqimed by the eulogies and' that he would always recall his association with th'e Herald as one which had greatly henefitted his training. He felt that what he had learned would he useful m the worlc befoie him. Various departments had already farewelled Mr. Freeth at a social gathering when a presentation was made.
