COUNCIL POINTERS, EXTRACTS FROM REPORTS FROM VARIOUS COMMITTEES. The following are extracts from the reports of the various committees tabled at the meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council: — The general committee reported: — Plunket Room. — Having received a request from the Plunket Society to have the windows in the Plunket Room attended to and the notice board altered and having auth'orised this work to be carried out. Inspector's Uniform. — Having agreed to the purchase of a new uniform for the traffic inspector, the County Council having undertaken to pay half the cost. Noxious Weeds. — Having instructed the inspector to take proceedings against all property owners who have not complied with notices received by them requiring them to cut the noxious weeds on their property. Prosecutions. — Having authorised prosecutions as under: Failure to take out a building permit, 1; breach of motor lorry regulations, 5. By-laws. — Having considered certain necessary amendments to the bylaws and having instructed the town clerk to draft these amendments and submit same to the borough solicitor. The works committee reported: — Railway Stockyards. — A letter was received from the General Manager, N.Z. Railways, advising that the council's representations regardin.g the suggested site for the stockyards or one adjacent to the [Wairoa Road will be carefully considered shoulu the question of removal of the cattle yards from the present site be under consideration at some future date. Transport Licensing. — A letter from the Manager, iR.M. Transport Co., advised that when the Transport Licensing Authority granted licenses for sightseeing trips, they inserted a condition that unless there were more than two passengers the trips should not be run. It was pointed "out to the board that such a condition would be a serious setback to the tourist traffic. Overseas agencies would have to advise their cli'ents that although they were ibooked for the trip, they would not be ahle to go unless there were other passengers. The policy of this company had always been to take two passengerS, as it realised it was against the interests of the tourist traffic to go away disappointed. Application was made to the Licensing Authority to have this condition amended, but another transport service objected and the request was refused. He asks if the Council would give this matter their early consideration and if possible help by writing to the Com'missioner of Transport to have the condition amended as requested by his company. — The eouricil decided to lend its support. Beautifying Ohinemutu. — The secretary, Komiti Marae, Ohinemutu, wrote asking that the council supply necessary rocks to replace the present dilapidated fence at Toumataherea, between Houkotuku and Arataua Street, and enquiring what the cost of material would be delivered on the ground. The komiti suggests that the work of the ©reefton of the fence be done by unemployed labour. Borough Revaluation. — The officer in charge, Valuation Department, Auckland, advised that the council's request for a revaluation has been referred to the Valuer-General, Auckland. Transport Facility. — That in order to keep the horses belonging to the sanitary service fully occupied and to assist the engineer in the transport of materials, tenders have been called for the supply of two secondhand tip springcarts and two sets of barness. The reserves committee reported: — Kuirau Domain. — Draining: That in order to de-water the western portion of the Kuirau Domain, the main drain in Pukuatua Street from the railway drain to the boundary of the reserve be deepened; that eight main drains be dug running east and west aeross the domain, and as many lateral drains as may be deemed necessary; the work to be carried out as a relief work under No. 5 scheme. Supply of Water: That a water tap be installed in the domain adjacent to the old site of the crusher in Ranolf Street. Fencing. That that portion of the domain between Arawa Street and the Kuirau Reserve, fronting Ranolf Street, be fenced with a fourwire fence Flowering Annuals: That in order to beautify the cleared portion of the domain and to improve the ground for future grassing, seeds of Californian poppy, dwarf hlue lupin

and dwarf nasturtium be obtained and planted. Lake Front. — That the plan preP'ared by Mr. Tschopp and submitted herewith be approved for the general layout of the Lake Front. Railway Shed. — Having submitted to the iRailway Department plan of suggested planting of the area of land between the railway shed and Fenton Street and having asked the department if they will supply the necessary rock and soil for filling if the council will provide trees and labour. — The committee recommended that if the department agrees to this proposal, the work he carried out as a relief work under No. 5 scheme. Carved House. — Having requested His Worship the Mayor and Cr. Galbraith to investigate the possibility of obtaining a caretaker for the Carved House at Whakarewarewa. Sewerage Farm. — Having authorised the purchase of 1000 Lawsoniana plants at a cost of 25s for planting the boundaries of this area; the trees to he planted out in the borough nursery for 12 months. | Block LVII. — Having granted permission to the members of Tuhoe tribe to remove the corrugated iron shed from Section 4 on to the native reserve under the control of Tuhoe. The band committee reported: — Band Uniforms. — Having called for quotations for the supply of 30 uniforms for members of the band and for the conductor. The uniforms to be of blue vicuna cloth. Tunic to be buttoned with six buttons, having no I outside pockets, the collar to be red- I edged with black ibraid, twisted red I cord on shoulders, plain broad black I braid and to have a narrow red i" now red piping. Cap to have black

braid. and to have a narr ow red piping round the top edge. Trousers to have a broad red band down the outside of the leg. Conductor's uniform to match. Play-outs. — Having requested thje band to play occasionally at King George V. Hospital between the months of May and November. Band Uniform. — Having instructed the town clerk to take proceedings for the recovery of a band uniform from an ex-member of the band. Bandroom. — That provided the finance committee can make satisfactory arrangements for finance, the alterations to the bandroom on the lines of the plans submitted by the borough engineer ibe proceeded with. Auckland Waterside Band — That arrangements be made for this band to visit Rotorua between Christmas and New Year for one week; the council to arrange billeting and meals; the band to be responsible for their fares and to fall in with any arrangements which' the publicity and amusement committee may make. The band not to be permitted to take up any collection during the period of their visit. N.Z. Band Association. — That in order that "the band may be in a position to compete at. approaching band contests, the council affiliate the Muni- ' cipal Band with the N.Z. Band Association.
