BASKETBALL

SEASON ENDS VICTORY OVER THAMES MAKEJS SUCCESSFUU CONCLUSION. REPRE SENT ATI VE RECORD. (Notes by "Centre.") The final game under the auspiceg of the Rotorua Basketball Association was played last Saturday, when Rotorua B defeated Thames in their return game by 23 goals to 14. Thames commenced well and in the early part of the game had the better of play. They scored four goals in quick succession before the Rotorua fprwards could open their score. After this, Rotorua's centre realised that fresh tactics ;and harder play wopld have to be adopted to keep their forwards supplied with the ball, and it was not long before their efforts were rewarded by the accurate shootipg of J. Prenter, who gained two goals in a comparatively short time. This seemed to eneourage the local team and, alth'ough Thames gained yet another two goals, Rotorua soon drew even, The game then became fast and keen, the score showing 6 all, 7 all, and 8 all nntil a minute before halftime, when J. Mulcahy shot a long distance go'al for Thames, making the score : • Thames, 9; Rotorua, 8. In the second spell, Thames seemed unable to continue the fast pace previously set, while Rotorua played with' renewed vigour. Their quick, short passing was now showing to advantage and the long high passes of the Thames comibination were being early intercepted. Jn this spell Thames only gained five goals against Rotorua's 15. The final score being: "■ Rotorua 23; Tliames, 14. Mrs. I. Shearer was the referee. The best forward on the field was J. Mulcahy. Sh'e was one of Thames smartest players, but her speed, agility and accurate goal shooting was a pleasure to wateh. Lorna McGlynn was anotber outstanding Thames player who was distinguished for her accurate handling and fast court work. J. Prenter, Rotorua, proved an unselfish player and worked hard to supply her other two forwards with opportunities for goalthrowing. Representat'ive Results. The table shown below gives an in-

dication of representative games played by Rotorua during this season: —

The above proved that, while the standard of play in Rotorua favourably compares with the smaller towns, there is still further room for improvement before Rotorua can expect to competq with cities such as Auckland and Wellington.
