ECONOMY REPORT SOME RECOMMENDATIONS WILL DEFINITELY ' BE DROPPED. MINISTER IS OUTSPOKEN

Wellington, Thursday. An indication that the Government does not intend to give effect to certain of the recommendations regarding social services made by the National Expenditure Commission, was given in the House of Representatives this evening hy the Minister of Health, Hon. J. A. Youngy Mr. Young said that while there was much in the report which was of value, it was surprising to find ' in business men, a lack of appreciation of the importanee of the work being carried out in the interests of the health of the community. Reference was made to the assist-" ance extended to Plunket Societies but it had to he remembered that two thirds of the money expended was raised by the society itself. "I am really surprised to find men showing such a grasp of financial matters showing so little feeling on the human side," said the Minister. There were certain recommendations regarding the maternity welf are work being carried out by the Government, which he considered it would be. absolutely wrong to adopt. The women of the country were entitled to the best possible treatment. "I ean say definitely," said Mr. Young, "that as far as these recommendations are concerned, they will not be adopted and I think I have Cabinet with me in that. The Minister expressed the opinion that before any ehange was made in the' curre.ncy system of the country the position would have to be very earefully "investigated by the Government. There was a demand for currency reform and all sorts of remedies had been put f orward, but any changes which were made would have to be examined with care. The Labour Party would have. to accept part of the responsibility for the. cost of public works for it had consistently demanded that these works be carried out.
