P.W.D. CONTRACTS

("Post" Speeial Commissioner).

legislation to ensure payment of men's wages

Wellington; Tuesdhy. Legislation of far-reaehing importahce to the wof kmeii employed a by contractors on public works johs knd other State eritefprises, is to be brought down this session. , It will provide that ihen engaged iri this class of work will enjoy the same pfivil'eges as far as the Workmeri's Liens Act is concerned, as the men working for contractors on private work. While it has heen possible for nien to secure their wages when working for private contractors, those employed by firms doing public works contracts have not had this right, the Crown being exempted. It is the intention of the acting-Minister of Public Works (Hon, 0. E. Maemillan) to have this changed, and to bring the whole of the Crown contracts within the Act. The effect of the amendment will be that the Public Works Department ahd other State Departments, when letting contracts, will have to ensure that the contraetor is in a position to pay the wages. of the workmen and, if necessary, attach the mdneys due to the contraetor in order that wages, which are a first charge on the contract, may be paid.
