SCORES OF WOMEN BID AT SALE. When the furniture and fittings of Chalklands, the beautiful home of the [ late Edgar Wallace, amid the Buck- : inghamshire hills, near Bourne End, ; were put up for auetion, scores of j smartly dressed women- vied with j dealers for the more beautiful, valui able, or useful articles, but there was a surprise when the mahogany writ-ing'-desk at which Mr. Wallace had done much of his work was put up. The table, with its concave centre, sunk compartments, and railway trolly j pen tray, was characteristic of the ori dered methods of the prolific writer. ! The bidding started at £3 13s 6d, and the lot was soon withdrawn, with only £8 8s offered. The mahogany writing-chaii*, in crimson morocco leather, which Mr. Wallace had occupied when he sat at his desk, was sold for £11 11s.
