Womens' Institutes Delegates from the Opotiki branch•es of the Women's Institutes attended the council meeting of the Bay of Plenty Federation of Women's Institutes held at Whakatane last week. Among the delegates were Mrs. R. Hedley and Mrs. A. F'orbes of Opotiki, Mrs. Scott and Mrs. King of Waiotahi, Mrs. Lowe and Mrs. White of Otara, Mrs. J. Armstrong and Mrs. P. Mulhern, of Woodlands, Mrs. Finn and Mrs. Hewitt of Waimana. Miss J. opencer chief organiser of the Women's Institute movement in the Dominion was present and gave a very interesting address on the Women's Institute movement from its inception until the present day. Sh'e also gave an instructive demonstration of spinning with a spindle, and had with her an exhibition of handcrafts. The next annual meeting will be held in April at Opotiki. Rugby Union The Opotiki Rugby Sub-Union eommittee decided on Monday evening to hold a football gymkana on Saturday next October 1. The proceeds will be for the benefit of the local unemployed. On reeeipt of the representative caps, which are being presented annually by John Buchanan, Ltd., the union will hold a social and dance at which the caps and trophies will be presented to the winners. New Institute A meeting was held recently at the residenee of Mrs. G. Vanstone for the purpose of forming a Women's Institute at Otara. Miss J. Spencer, who is the organiser of the movement throughout the Dominion and who first introduced the movement from England to New Zealand in 1921, formed the new branch. Mrs. Morrice was elected president with Mrs. C. McMillan, Mrs. Russell, treasurer, and home and country representative, Mrs. Skipper, press correspondent, Mrs. A. Fofbes. Mrs. Stan White, Mrs. Vanstone, snr., and Mrs. Lowe were enrolled as members.
